How to Build a Relationship with God (Part 1)
Has your heart been searching?
Do you feel an emptiness that nothing can fulfill?
Searching can be draining and frustrating. I’ve been there and no matter how much I tried I couldn’t fill the empty space on my own.
The constant overwhelming yearning for peace in our souls drives us to unhealthy – unrecognizable versions of ourselves.
Where do we turn? Who do we turn to?
If you feel you’re searching today, I hope you’ll spend a couple of minutes here. I’m going to share how what – or better yet – Who you believe, can end your search for fulfillment…And actually provide the rest and contentment you desire.
It’s my prayer, that just like I did, you’ll find that Jesus is Who you’re seeking to fill the empty places in your life.
Building a relationship with Jesus doesn’t take a lot of work but like any relationship, it requires time.
And we don’t want to see this relationship as just any relationship.
Our relationship with Jesus is the most important relationship we’ll ever have.
Read on to see what it takes to build a relationship with Jesus. It’s easier than you think.
#1 Just Believe
You may be thinking there’s too much you have to do to be a Christian.
It really can look that way sometimes.
But if you truly want to build a relationship with God the first thing you have to do is believe.
Really.
Just believe…
- Believe that He is God.
- Believe that He loves you.
- Believe that He wants a relationship with you.
- Believe that He accepts you as you are – You don’t need to “get your life right” to come to Him. He will do the work in you.
Just believe.
In John 3:15, Jesus says all you have to do is believe.
Here’s the actual verse:
“…that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” John 3:15 NIV
Jesus says, whoever believes in Him will have eternal life.
Now that may sound too easy, but that is what’s expected of you if you want to build a relationship with God.
Well there is something else. Read on…
#2 Know that God Loves You
The Bible says, God loves us so much that He gave His only Son (Jesus) and whoever believes in Him will have eternal life. John 3:16 NIV
Most of the time we read this verse alone.
But if we read it in context, we will see that this verse is part of a conversation.
Jesus is talking with a man who is a Pharisee.
In their time, this Pharisee, named Nicodemus would have been “considered” higher than those who had a background similar to Jesus.
But Nicodemus knew there was something about Jesus, and he wanted to know what it was.
He was searching.
Jesus shared with Nicodemus, how to know who HE (Jesus) was, how much God loved him, and how he could have eternal life.
God loves us so much and there is nothing you or I have to do to earn His love.
Does that bring relief to your heavy soul?
Let me tell you, it does for mine.
Many try to make us believe that we have to do something to earn God’s love, but we don’t.
When we start to do more, it’s because we love God and we want to strengthen our relationship with Him.
We want to help others know Him, because we understand the value in knowing Him.
It’s life-changing to know Jesus! – Eternal life changing.
When He sent Jesus, He was showing us just how much He loved us.
God’s one and only Son would die on the cross to save us from our sins.
And Jesus (that Son) died for us… He died for us!
The sin we should have been responsible for, He took it and nailed it to the cross so that we could be free.
He is so worthy of our praise!
The Bible says that there is no greater love that one could have for someone else than to have your Friend give His life for you.
Jesus did that for us. I don’t know of a better Friend.
Here’s another thing to know when you’re building a relationship with Jesus.
#3 Jesus makes us righteous
When we believe, we become righteous.
Do you believe that?
We’re not righteous because of our ability to do anything.
It’s only because God sees us through Jesus.
When Jesus died on the cross for our sins, He paid the price that was ours to pay.
Because He died for us, it made us righteous.
Paul says in Galatians 2:20-21 NIV:
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. [21] I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”
Because we believe that Christ died for us we have been “cleaned up”, adopted, and He sees us as His children.
We also receive grace, that we know we don’t deserve, but He gives it to us freely.
Because He died for us we have become righteous in God’s eyes.
But, it’s only because of Jesus.
Conclusion
Did you ever think that building a relationship with God could be so easy?
All you have to do is believe and Jesus Christ accepts you into His family.
If you want to accept Christ in your life all you have to say is:
God, I confess that I’m a sinner. I believe that you died for my sins. I invite you to come into my heart. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
Sincerely saying those words and truly believing them, makes you saved!
God bless you and welcome to the family of God!
I want to make this disclaimer, I’m not a preacher, but I personally know the importance of a relationship with God.
Now that you have accepted Christ, find a Bible teaching church. Find a church where you can truly learn about Jesus.
Share with other believers that you have given your life to Christ.
By the way, this post is labeled Part 1 because I want to share how to continue growing in your relationship with God, in Part 2.
But for now, I’m praying for you.
God bless and until next time,
Aisha
